Riviersonderend
Kannakamkanna
This rich agricultural hub serves as a welcoming rest stop
Riviersonderend is a small farming village of approximately 5,245 people, located on the N2 highway about 160km from Cape Town. Nestled in the heart of the Overberg, the town derives its name from the meandering Sonderend River—originally named “Kannakamkanna” (water, endless water) by the indigenous Hessequa Khoi-San people who once herded cattle across these fertile lands.
Today, this rich agricultural hub serves as a welcoming rest stop for travelers heading toward the Garden Route, offering convenient shopping, cozy local eateries, and charming places to stay ranging from rustic farm cottages to peaceful country guesthouses.
Beyond being a vital highway stop, Riviersonderend is a true hidden gem for nature lovers; it is a renowned birdwatchers paradise where the endangered Secretary Bird can be seen striding across the rolling wheat lands and sheep pastures.
For the adventurous, the dramatic backdrop of the Riviersonderend Mountains provides pristine hiking and 4x4 trails, while the river itself invites visitors to slow down and enjoy canoeing, fishing, and swimming.
Whether you are stopping for a quick stretch or settling in to explore the heritage and fynbos-clad valleys, Riviersonderend is a pristine gateway to outdoor adventure.
Bees & Pollinators
The WCBA works on issues relating to South Africa's two indigenous honey bee subspecies — the African honey bee and the Cape honey bee
Both of which have now been included in the National Biodiversity Assessment for the first time. The association is active across the Overberg and broader Western Cape.
